On April Waltari travelled to ebipteanul mother-in-law’s mansion in Hartolawhere he began writing in the attic. Central to the novel’s themes is the conviction of the unchanging nature of mankind, exemplified by the reoccurring phrase “so there has ever been and ever will be”. It’s a rich book, a bawdy book, a book that carries one to distant shores and makes one feel an onlooker as was Sinuhe. Waltari finally gained appreciation in Finland in the s, after his historical novels had made appearances in French bestseller lists one after another. He does doctor a few people now and then. During my life I have seen, known, and lost too much to be the prey of vain dread; and, as for the hope of immortality, I am as weary of that as I am of gods and kings.
In these novels, he gave powerful expression to his fundamental pessimism and also, in two novels set in the Roman Empire, to his Christian conviction. Get to Know Us. Sinuhe is attracted to the teachings that the new king proclaims and, as he feels, focuses on light, equality and justice, and joins Akhenaten’s court. I started out so gung ho over this book but couldn’t finish it. Ecclesiastes was an influence, both stylistically and thematically.
